The PULSE triptych is inspired
by François Cheng's book "Vide et Plein, le langage pictural
chinois "(Fullness and Emptiness, the Chinese pictorial language).
It includes PETIT PULSE (a little physical poem inside the restricted
space of a puppet theater; estranged movements, moving light and an only
partially visible body defy our perception and deconstruct the human appearance),
PULSE SOLO (light, sound and dance create together a pulsation between
private and public, presence and absence, fullness and emptiness) and
the duo PULSE+.
Concept: Melanie Munt
Choreography and dance:
Melanie Munt and, for the duet Pulse+, Aleksandra Janeva
Light design: Laurence Halloy
Sound design: Antonin De Bemels

about PETIT PULSE:
Light can change the appearance of shapes by creating apparent but fictive
connections between body parts and it can give the impression of movement
in an immobile body if the direction of the rays are changing slightly.
These are elements that estrange the human appearance. I try to strengthen
that alienation by playing around with and changing the natural dynamic
of human movements and by keeping always some body parts covered.
The intimacy of the restricted space of a black box similar to a puppet
theater and a restricted distance between me and the audience allows a
focus / zoom on the body and therefore more subtle movements than those
possible on stage. By composing with recorded natural sounds that would
in normal life barely be audible and by synchronizing a body movement
with an 'inappropriate' sound that results of a movement of a different
material, Antonin is creating the impression of abnormal closeness and
enhances the alienation of human physicality.
